When I began sharing my outdoor experiences 6 years ago, it was very hard to find other black outdoor lovers to connect with online.
As the years have gone on it’s been really exciting to see the increase in groups that plan and lead outdoor activities for black people and people of color.
There are more black outdoor bloggers and black outdoor social media influencers flooding Instagram and Facebook with images of black people doing fun and amazing things outdoors like mountain biking, hiking, scuba diving, kayaking, rock climbing, and skiing.
Representation is everything! While there’s still much work to do and improvement needed in the way outdoor brands and outdoor recreation are marketed to be more diverse and inclusive, things are certainly improving and heading in the right direction.
I’m so happy to be a part of the black outdoor movement to encourage our sisters and brothers to embrace nature and try outdoor recreational activities.
We are here to break boundaries and let the world know that whatever they say “black people don’t do” is fallacies and unicorns.
