Visiting Blowing Rocks Preserve – One of Florida’s Best Secret Beaches

Along the east coast of Florida just north of Jupiter beach, is Blowing Rocks Preserve, one of Florida’s Best kept secrets.   Florida is known for stretches of white sand and beautiful water ranging from emerald, to turquoise, to aqua blue depending on where you are.   What it’s not known for are rugged coastlines.

Blowing Rocks is one of the most unexpected natural gems in this entire state!   Massive jagged porous rocks, formed from shells, line the coastline providing for some of the most scenic views you will ever find.   When the tide is out, you can walk beneath the rocks exploring the nooks and crannies for sea life and shells. However during extreme high tides or impending storms out in the Atlantic, the water rushes up against the rocks and spouts water out up to 50 feet high.  If you live in Florida, this should be high on your list of places to see.   It’s a truly unique and majestic place.  In fact, this is one post I hesitated to write because I really didn’t want to share this secret.   I know…selfish.  I’m an only child so it happens.  Lucky for you, I love my readers!

 

Walking through this mangrove tunnel to get to the beach was very peaceful and serene and best of all, shaded.

 

Once you come out of the mangrove tunnels this is the view that rewards you! It doesn’t even look like Florida. I was in awe.

Admission is just a $2 donation.  The nature conservatory offers guided tours of the surrounding mangroves and beach walks.

Getting there isn’t rocket science but this isn’t a place you might just happen upon.  You could pass right through the preserve not knowing what lied just beyond the hedges.  It’s located on Jupiter island just a short drive beyond I-95 off the A1A highway.

Tips:

1. Visit the website to help you plan your visit.
2. Check the tide times when you plan your visit.
3. The rocks are jagged and very sharp.   It’s neat to walk out onto the rocky ledges, but flip-flops just won’t do.   Bring water shoes or even tennis shoes to make your exploring a bit more comfortable.
4. Bring your camera.  Be advised professional/commercial photography must be pre-authorized.
5. Allow yourself plenty of time to explore so that you don’t feel rushed.  .

If you are traveling from a notable distance to visit the preserve, I highly suggest you also visit John. D. MacArthur Beach State Park.  I also visited Jupiter Beach and Palm Beach as I made my way up A1A highway.  This area is a great destination for a road trip.

I went alone on this trip and had a solo picnic. It was the perfect way to escape and allow myself to get lost in my thoughts, talk to God, and just be still and listen.  I will most definitely make my way back very soon with my brand new camera!  (wink wink)   Next time, I’ll bring along the kiddies so they can play among the rocks and caves.  I think they are going to love it!   I hope you find the time to seek out this treasure, but let’s not tell too many people about it.  I want to keep it our little secret.
