Through a partnership with Cirque du Soleil and Tampa Bay Bloggers, my family and I were hosted to see the show.
Last night was opening night for the VOLTA Cirque du Soleil Production in Tampa and it exceeded all of our expectations. I took my mom and my teenage son with me for their first Cirque experience.
Since it was opening night the atmosphere was extra festive with hors d’oeuvres and cocktails and a colorful drumline. They also gave out red clown noses and had a photo wall set up where you could strike a pose in front of the big top.
We were seated in section 2 which faces center stage with a completely unobstructed view.
VOLTA has moments of humor as well as the beauty, color, and wonderment that Cirque shows are known for.
There are so many elements incorporated into the show so it really does take you on a visual adventure of art in motion.
The awe-inspiring acrobatics and killer double dutch jump rope segments were a lot of fun. However, I love to see the aerial stunts and there was no shortage of those throughout the night.
The tight rope walker had me holding my breath, but of all of the aerialist, the performer who was suspended from a wire attached to her hair bun was by far my favorite. It was unbelievable!
I also really enjoyed the violinist/singer. Her voice was mesmerizing!
One really cool element of this show is that it incorporates bike tricks. These aren’t your ordinary skate park tricks. They are on another level. I really enjoyed the segment where there was a dancer and a bicyclist and he danced with her and even mimicked her dances while on his bicycle. I thought it was so creative.
My son’s favorite part of the show was the BMX bikes finale. I don’t want to spoil it for you but let me just say that it left us breathless.
I think the show is a fun way to spend an evening as a family. However, as a word of warning, there is one brief comedy section of the show in the second half that some attendees might find to be a little crude for some younger viewers. The performer has on a loin cloth so there are some exposed buttocks; fair warning. We thought it was pretty funny but someone else may be caught off guard by it.
TIPS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
- Parking is $20; They accept cash and credit card but when we were there only one person had the card machine so it took us much longer to park.
- Bring a sweater or a light jacket, especially if you are seated in some of the rows higher up. The air vents were blowing directly on our heads and we were freezing.
- There are concessions. A bottle of water is $5 and that’s pretty much the cheapest thing on the menu to give you an idea of costs. It’s cheaper than a Bucs game but a little bit higher than a vending machine.
- There’s really not a bad seat in the house, but section 2 has the best unobstructed view if you are down front.
- About the restroom situation, sorry folks they are Port-O-Potties. Take hand sanitizer with you because there wasn’t any type of soap and water to wash your hands.
- The show lasted from 8 to 10:30 with a 25 minute intermission in the middle.
- Pictures are allowed but no flash photography. But try to be present in the moment and really enjoy the show. I didn’t take many photos during the show for that reason. I wanted to be immersed.
