This week I had a fun local adventure attending the opening night of the Tony Award-winning musical, Once On This Island at Straz Center in Tampa. Thanks to my relationship with Tampa Bay Bloggers, I received complimentary tickets from the Straz Center. Full disclosure
I was really looking forward to seeing this musical since I saw the live performance on the 2018 Tony Awards.
What really drew me in was how they transported you to the island where the musical is set. I love musicals and plays that take you on a trip.
With the props and the addition of the sand on stage and special effects to produce rain and lightning, we really felt like we were whisked away to some small Caribbean island.
The vocal talent of every one of the performers was amazing. They are all so talented and I was really blown away. You not only heard the melodies, but you felt every note.
The Afro-Caribbean dancing infused throughout the musical made me wish I could hop on the stage and join in!
In fact, there were members of the audience on the stage throughout the entire performance and I don’t know how they managed to sit still in their seats.
I was in the audience clapping and swaying!
I’m so grateful that The Straz Center brings quality broadway shows to Tampa. It’s great for locals who may not be able to make a trip to NY for a show.
It’s also a great activity for tourists to the area to know that while they are here, they can take in a quality performance at The Straz.
I hope you will take the opportunity to see Once On This Island while it’s here through this Sunday, November 24th.
If it happens to be playing in your city, do yourself the favor and take that island adventure.

November 22, 2019 at 10:50 amI’ve seen advertisements for this because it’s coming to Chicago in January. I love musicals too. I’ll have to get tickets.
