Glamping at Westgate River Ranch Dude Ranch

I’m a birthday person. I believe in celebrating your birthday as big and bold as you possibly can because anytime you get a chance to see another full year of life it’s worth celebrating. The last few years I’ve forgone the party or the dinner with friends. Instead I’ve chosen to celebrate my birthday on some kind of travel adventure. In fact prior to this year, my last 2 birthdays were spent out of the country.

This year I decided I wanted to do something really different but in lieu of an international trip it would be a domestic trip. Not to worry — what it lacked in distance it made up for in uniqueness. I spent this year’s 10th annual Laurentines Day on a glamping adventure at a Florida dude ranch! (If you’re new here, Laurentines Day is the national holiday that IS my birthday)

Just an hour and half from Tampa is the Westgate River Ranch, a real life dude ranch in the Lake Wales area.  2 of my close friends came along for the fun and we completely immersed ourselves into the Cowgirl way of life over an extended weekend of adventure, laughter, and new experiences.  Read More »

Daytona Beach Family Getaway

I’m not a native Floridian but I’ve lived in Florida since I was a young teenager.  I used to hear so much about the infamous Daytona Beach but I had never experienced it as a vacation destination.  A couple of weeks ago the teenager and I snuck in some much needed family time on a quick getaway to Daytona Beach courtesy of Daytona Beach Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. He had a non student day at school on a Monday making it the perfect time for an extended weekend.  With high school football season in full swing and his demanding course load we don’t have nearly as much free time as I’m accustomed to having.  This weekend of family fun and recuperation couldn’t have come at a better time.  I think he needed a chance to rejuvenate and so did I.  Daytona proved to be a great choice for family fun time.

Camping While Black

black family camping

I came across an article about a Sacramento family that had a horrific experience at a campground in Nevada.  According to news reports, they were verbally assaulted with racial slurs and harassed by a group of white campers that did not like their presence there.  Things escalated and it is alleged that one of the white campers threatened the staff of the campground when they tried to intervene.  Allegedly, he then threatened the family, brandishing a shovel!  It sounds like scenes from a movie set in the Jim Crow days right?  Surely something like this wouldn’t occur to a black family camping in 2015.  It can and it did.  You can read about it for yourself: Black Family Victims of Hate Crime.

Atlanta Glamping Adventure

atlanta glamping adventure

Ahhhh Atlanta, also known as the Hollywood of the South.  I love visiting Atlanta because there is an abundance of things to do and I’ve always had friends to visit who live there. My son and I have visited the MLK memorial, the amazing whale sharks at the Georgia Aquarium, and we’ve done the Snow Mountain winter wonderland at Stone Mountain. What you may not know is that Atlanta is a hop skip and a jump away from some pretty sweet places to get your nature on.  (See past post about Chattahoochee tubing and Anna Ruby Falls.) In fact, there are at least 8 Georgia state parks within an hour to hour and a half driving distance.  Read More »

Family Travel Adventure: Wiping Out At the Kalahari Waterpark Resort, Sandusky

Ride Wives in Winter

Waterparks are a definite summertime privilege that we all look forward to.  However, Florida waterparks in the summer also come with the perils of scorching hot pavement when you come out of the water, bugs that like to fly around and ruin the fun, and those pesky summer storms that roll in just about everyday with their ominous clouds and thunder and lightning that forces you out of the water to seek shelter.  It’s a real struggle bus sometimes.  But what if I told you there was a glorious place where you can enjoy the waterpark rain or shine, cold or hot, and there are no wasps, ants, or mosquitos around to harass you . Where is this mermaid mecca?  It’s the massive indoor waterpark at Kalahari Resort in Sandusky, Ohio, the largest indoor waterpark in America!  Read More »
