Try The Burger King Halloween Whopper I Said…

I live for the next great foodie adventure, so when the new Burger King Halloween Whopper was introduced this month I jumped at the chance to try this most unusual burger with black buns.

????????????????????????????????????

I’ve lamented for quite some time over how lame the U.S. fast food market is because we don’t get any of the cool colored buns.  Burger King released a red bun this summer in Japan and I was über jealous.

A friend living as an expat in Saudi Arabia shared this picture with me of the green Whopper released in honor of National Saudi Day.

Burger King Japan also released a black burger with black cheese and black sauce. They used squid ink and bamboo charcoal to achieve the color with this one.

So finally this fall the United States was getting our very own fast food foodie challenge with the release of the Halloween Whopper.  I was glad to learn that no squid ink was used.  Instead they used A1 Steak Sauce to flavor the bun and produce the black color. I like A1 Steak Sauce so how could this be a bad thing?

I was soon to find out.

At first glance it didn’t look very appetizing to be honest.  But hey this is fast food and nothing looks like the advertisement so that wasn’t a surprise at all.  I also added bacon to my Halloween Whopper to make it extra snazzy. I haven’t eaten a Burger King whopper in years so if I’m going to use these calories I may as well go hard right?

I took a bite and it tastes like a regular Whopper. I took a second bite and I could taste a hint of the A1 sauce.  I took a pinch of just the black bun and I could taste the sauce but honestly it wasn’t very strong.

I was underwhelmed but it was edible.  I finished my whopper and then took two Gas-X for good measure.

I know the question you are all dying to know the answer to….Did I know about the special “trick” that accompanied eating the black Whopper?  Well yes and no.  I had only come across one article about the claims that eating the Halloween Whopper was turning people’s poo bright green.  I didn’t even open the article to read it fully and I honestly assumed it was a hoax.  It wasn’t a reputable site or anything.   But after I shared the picture of my black Whopper on my social media page, my friends all began to warn me that the inevitable was coming.  Some who had already eaten it had experienced these “side effects.”  And then I got nervous.

I thought I was in the clear 24 hours later after no abnormal happenings.  I even boasted to a friend that he was wrong and everything was A-OK.

Eat the Halloween Whopper I said.  It will be such a great foodie adventure I said. We finally get something cool here in the U.S. I said.  *Hangs head in shame*

Then it happened…….

As it turns out it was not a hoax or rumor after all.  The Incredible Hulk paid my colon a visit.  For a second I thought I had become a human ATM machine spouting out money and emeralds.  It gives Kermit’s “It Ain’t Easy Being Green” song a new meaning. It was absolutely horrible and it just ain’t natural. It ain’t right Burger King!!

Trick-or-Treat indeed — they tricked us all.  Sometimes this adventurous spirit of mine doesn’t work in my favor.  The next time I ask myself “What would Andrew Zimmerman do?”  I’m going to do the exact opposite and eat something normal.  For future reference let’s just stick to brown, okay?

Have you ever eaten something you truly regret?  Share it with me in the comments below! Don’t leave me hanging.

I was seriously thinking of giving this a try. After reading your review I think I’ll pass. I hadn’t heard anything about a bathroom vacation. Thank goodness I read your article.

I just don’t think I could bring myself to try that thing. The black color just really turns me off as well as the prospect of green poo.

I think this is my most favorite blog post EVER! I even just made my Husband read it and you had him rolling in laughter too. I haven’t tried it and didn’t really want to. I am glad I have the warning though and even more glad that my awesome friend wrote this post. 🙂

OH MY GOODNESS! I can’t believe you ate it. But I’m not surprised it made you sick. But your description of being sick = ridiculously funny girl! (So is that worth it if it’s a good story?)

So, I’ve been seeing the ads for the black BK Whopper. It scared me when I first saw it. As you said, it’s not natural. Thanks for sharing your experience (and the humor). I will stick to my regular Whopper Jr’s.
